Knowing when to harvest outdoor cannabis is one of the most important parts of producing a clean, aromatic, and well-developed final flower. Harvest too early and the buds may feel light, grassy, and underdeveloped. Wait too long and the flowers can lose freshness, become more vulnerable to mold, or develop a heavier effect than intended.
The first visual sign to watch is the pistils, often called the hairs of the flower. Early in flowering, many pistils are bright white and straight. As the plant matures, they darken, curl inward, and become less prominent. Dense buds with mostly dark, curled pistils are usually closer to harvest than buds still covered in fresh white hairs.
For a more accurate reading, examine the trichomes: the tiny resin glands that cover the flowers. Clear trichomes usually indicate the plant is still maturing, cloudy trichomes suggest peak resin development, and amber trichomes show a later stage of ripeness. Many growers use trichome color together with pistil color, bud density, aroma, and overall plant health to decide the best harvest window.
Genetics also matter. Sativa-leaning varieties often need more time outdoors, while indica-leaning plants may finish earlier. In Thailand’s warm and humid climate, the best harvest timing balances maturity with weather conditions, airflow, and the risk of rain or mold near the end of flowering.
After Harvest: Drying Outdoor Cannabis
After harvest, drying should be slow, clean, and controlled. A dark, well-ventilated space helps preserve aroma and reduce moisture gradually. Good airflow is important, but strong direct wind on the flowers can dry the outside too quickly while leaving moisture inside. The goal is an even dry that protects terpenes, texture, and overall flower quality.
Once the stems begin to snap rather than bend and the outside of the flowers feels dry without becoming brittle, the buds are usually ready for the next stage of storage and curing. Careful drying makes a major difference in the final smell, smoothness, and quality of outdoor cannabis.
